…you can celebrate #ManateeAppreciationDay anywhere by researching manatees, starting your own awareness campaigns, or donating to manatee conservation programs.

Good day loves,Manatee Appreciation Day - Palm Beach Tattle

It’s that time of year again… Break out your celebratory manatee apparel, party supplies, or whatever you’ve got. “Why?”, you ask?! Well… it’s #ManateeAppreciationDay today (in case you forgot).

Each year on the last Wednesday in March, it’s one of Florida’s favorite days (especially in Palm Beach). We just adore manatees… and how couldn’t we? They are some fascinating creatures.

I didn’t realize we had such a day until I moved to Florida. However, through my visits to the Manatee Lagoon, I’ve learned #ManateeAppreciationDay is recognized in areas with large manatee populations, such as right here in Florida, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The FPL Eco-Discovery Center in West Palm Beach offers manatee-webcams, viewing areas, and hands on exhibits to learn more about these fabulous creatures (if you so desire).

Now, you don’t just have to be in lovely Palm Beach to celebrate this day… you can celebrate #ManateeAppreciationDay anywhere by researching manatees, starting your own awareness campaigns, or donating to manatee conservation programs.

I love to see manatees in the intracoastal… Their size and gentle nature always amazes me. You can see a good amount of them in Palm Beach because of the fact they like saltwater bays, rivers, and canals. My friends at the Manatee Lagoon tell me that as a migratory species, they inhabit the Florida waters during the winter and move toward Virginia and Texas in the summer months.

The most significant challenge manatees face today is the loss of habitat. So if you see one, be sure to leave it alone! After all, they are currently listed as “endangered”, and sources tell me the federal government may change their status to “threatened”.

So now that you know a little bit about manatees… go and celebrate this day with coworkers and friends (oh, and if you are having a party… I would love an invitation as well 😉 – I wouldn’t miss it)! I’ll bring the manatee cupcakes! Yay!

No, but seriously – remember to keep an eye out for them. Whether you are boating, jet skiing, swimming, or walking along the side of the intracoastal – be cautious and courteous of our sea cows. We <3 them, and we want them to be around for years to come!

Happy #ManateeAppreciationDay to you and yours.

XOXO,

PBT <3
